Greetings! My name is Mike Caprio, and if you remember me and the hackathons I've put together in the past, I am truly very honored.
You participated in at least one of my hackathons, so I'm sending you this email to let you know that I'm putting hackathons together again. I'm not going to send emails like this frequently, but if you absolutely don't want to hear from me about hackathon event stuff ever again, please reply to this message to let me know or hit the unsubscribe link and I'll immediately take you off the list.
All that said, it's been a while since I've done anything like this – almost five years! I hope that you and your loved ones have safely navigated all the challenges we've been facing the last couple of years. There's a lot of not so great stuff happening in the world these days, but if you're anything like me you very much want to work on fixing the things that are broken and to make the world a little better for everyone.
So I've created this list: "Hackathons For Good". And I've added all of you to it with the hope that you're as hungry as I am to solve some real problems for people who really need our help.
Right now I'm helping the awesome people who are putting together HackCT's inaugural transportation hackathon:
I know that when I lived in NYC, I took public transportation for granted; and I used it for everything, everyday – work, shopping, going to a movie, going to see my doctor. Outside of dense metro areas, especially in rural areas, lack of access to public transportation is a serious problem. Elderly, low-income, and isolated populations face barriers in getting critical social services, health care, education and training, employment, and healthy recreation – they're forced to rely on private transport options that are becoming increasingly expensive.
A coalition of nonprofits in Northeastern Connecticut (Windham County) have sponsored this event and they want you to join them and drive new transit solutions for Northeastern CT residents. The event will take place over a weekend beginning on Friday, September 15th – the weekend before National Day of Civic Hacking. We will start by presenting the transportation issues facing the region and then form teams to build on those challenges and to create tangible solutions to pressing problems.
We only have a limited number of seats for this event, so we'll ask you to fill out a very brief application for in person participation. Those of you who are selected to attend will get:
Free transportation from NYC, Hartford and New Haven to the hackathon and back
Free lodging for the duration of the event
Free meals all weekend
Event swag (woo!)
So if this sounds like your cup of tea and you want to help us at HackCT, please fill out the form at the link below right now and apply to be an on-site participant:
And even if you can't make it in person, you should still RSVP because you can participate virtually too! Here are the details, one more time:
